La Quinta Trade Gateway Terminal Project Port of Corpus Christi Authority 2009
Description :
The La Quinta Trade Gateway Terminal (Project) is a major component of the Port of Corpus Christi Authority’s (Port) long-term development plan. Located on a 1,100-acre greenfield site on the north side of Corpus Christi Bay, when completed, this fully permitted project will provide a state-of-the-art multi-purpose dock and container facility. Project features consist of the Federal extension of the 45’ deep La Quinta Ship Channel, construction of a 3800’ long, three (3) berth ship dock with nine ship-to-shore cranes, 180 acres of container/cargo storage yard, an intermodal rail yard, and over 400 acres for on-site distribution and warehouse centers. The facility will have the capacity to handle approx. 1 million TEUs annually. The Project is sited adjacent to US 181/IH 37 and is currently served by on-site rail road with the Class 1 main line located 1.5 miles away.

In 2004 the Project retained its first tenant, Gulf Compress, which constructed a 30 acre cotton storage facility containing 550,000 square foot of warehousing, with an option to double its size. Approximately 6,000+ TEUs of cotton are historically exported per year from the warehouse complex, principally to Asia and Mexico.

Key to moving forward with the construction of the Project was the recent Federal authorization to construct the extension of the La Quinta Ship Channel, a spur of the Corpus Christi Ship Channel, which will bring valuable deep water to the project site. With the authorization and initial appropriation to construct the channel, the Port was able to sign a Project Partnership Agreement (PPA) with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) in October 2009 to construct the extension. The COE has already initiated work by constructing a 126 acre dredge material placement area in 2010. Additional construction contracts will be bid and executed by the COE as Federal funds are appropriated. The channel extension is anticipated to be complete and ready to serve the Project by 2013.
The conceptual plans for the dock and landside improvements had been complete for several years, awaiting channel authorization to proceed. Upon execution of the PPA with the COE, the Port Commission also approved moving forward the final design and construction of the initial phase of the Project consisting of a single berth ship dock and required backland improvements. The Port hired engineering consultants and has completed the Preliminary Engineering Reports for both the landside and waterfront facilities, and will complete the final designs once sufficient Federal funds have been appropriated to provide the La Quinta channel extension. In coordination with the Federal funding for the channel extension, final designs are anticipated to be complete in 2012, with construction contracts awarded enabling Gulf Compress, the Port, and others, to begin shipping cotton and other products by 2013.
